Bis 1945 noch ein Vorort von Frankfurt/Oder, ist Słubice heute eine polnische Stadt an der Grenze zwischen Ost- und Westeuropa. Geprägt ist die Stadt vor allem durch den Grenzhandel. Durch den Basar, von den Deutschen „Polenmarkt“ genannt, ist die Stadt zum Synonym für billige Zigaretten und gefälschte Jeans geworden. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich jedoch mit dem Słubice abseits des „Polenmarktes“, einem Ort im Zentrum Europas, der doch Peripherie ist.
Closely linked to the German city Frankfurt/Oder, which it was part of until 1945, Słubice is today a polish town located between the borders of East and Western Europe. The city is especially characterized by its border trade. The bazaar, called ‚Polenmarkt‘ by the Germans, turned the city into a synonym for cheap cigarettes and faked jeans. This work deals with the Słubice apart from the ‚Polenmarkt‘, a place located right in the middle of Europe, which still is periphery.
